IT EXPERTISE

Product design
& UX.

When users struggle with a service, you need to understand what gets in their way. ACME helps you find UX designers, researchers, product owners and accessibility specialists. Consultants investigate needs, test ideas through prototypes and work with development teams. The assignment may cover a new product or improvements to a service already in use.

Design centred on people
HOW AN ASSIGNMENT COULD WORK

A digital service that more people can use

Situation
Users abandon important tasks in a digital service and support requests are increasing. The team has ideas for new features but does not know which obstacles matter most. The product owner wants to investigate before setting the next priorities.
The consultant’s contribution
A UX designer can combine support feedback with interviews and usability tests. A priority workflow is prototyped and tested for content, navigation and accessibility. Design decisions and open questions are passed to the product owner and developers.
Potential value
The research can identify priority improvements and how their effect can be assessed after implementation.

Three questions before your assignment

  • Which task needs to become easier?
  • Which user groups should participate in research?
  • How can improvement be reviewed after rollout?
IN DEPTH / PRODUCT DESIGN & UX

How a consultant
can help.

01

User insights and the service context

Interviews, observations and feedback show how people use the service. Research follows digital journeys and other touchpoints, including support. Participants should represent different users. Findings describe tasks, obstacles and the problems the team should prioritise.

02

Design, prototypes and shared patterns

A prototype tests a question before the team builds the full solution. It may address information structure, interaction or visual hierarchy. Shared design-system components support further development when ownership and usage rules are agreed with developers.

03

Accessibility as part of quality

Content, keyboard use, contrast and assistive technology are considered throughout development. Automated checks are combined with manual assessment and user testing. Each review states its scope and criteria, showing what was examined and what remains unresolved.

04

Product ownership and assessed user value

Product management weighs user needs against business goals and team capacity. Product owners and service owners agree authority and priorities. User feedback and behavioural measures help them choose between new features, quality and maintenance.

THE WORK IN PRACTICE

Examples of work
and deliverables.

We agree the scope and deliverables with you.

01

Insights that support decisions

Documented user needs, obstacles and recommended priorities. Findings can be traced back to the interviews, observations or tests carried out.

02

Tested workflows and clear design evidence

Tested prototypes and design decisions for the development team to take forward, including outstanding usability and accessibility issues.

03

Product priorities with follow-up

A product direction and prioritised plan with agreed measures. User feedback is connected to upcoming product decisions and named owners.

BEFORE YOUR NEXT STEP

Common questions
about this area.

Do we need research if we already know our users?

Existing knowledge is a useful starting point. Targeted research can test assumptions about a particular workflow or new audience. Ask which uncertainty affects the decision and how to investigate it with a proportionate amount of effort.

When do we need a UX designer rather than a product owner?

A UX designer often explores use and service design in depth. A product owner prioritises work and represents needs during delivery. Roles can overlap, but the assignment should clarify the expertise, decision authority and working relationships that are missing.

How do we know whether an improvement works?

Follow how easily people complete tasks, which errors occur and where they need help. Combine usability testing with relevant business measures and feedback. Assess the whole journey, including handovers to support or other channels that influence the experience.
