IT EXPERTISE

Product Development

Product development connects user needs with technology, engineering and commercial choices. ACME helps you find product developers, systems engineers and design engineers from early concepts through prototypes, verification and implementation. Assignments may concern physical products, digital solutions or integrated hardware and software. Expertise is selected for the product’s stage and the questions the team needs to address.

HOW AN ASSIGNMENT COULD WORK

A prototype that answers the right product question

Situation
A product team is developing a solution that combines mechanics, electronics and software. Several concepts are possible. The sponsor wants to know which interfaces and user requirements to test before the team commits to a direction.
The consultant’s contribution
A product developer or systems engineer can define a focused prototype with the team. Requirements are linked to design, information exchange and verification. Results and limitations are recorded for those responsible for further development, manufacturing and maintenance.
Potential value
The prototype can test key assumptions and identify the questions to address in the next development step.

Three questions before your assignment

  • Which uncertainty should the prototype help us understand?
  • Which disciplines and interfaces need testing together?
  • How should findings influence the next product decision?
IN DEPTH / PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

How a consultant
can help.

01

Needs, use and product requirements

Use cases and product requirements define the problem the product should solve. The consultant helps the team prioritise function, quality and cost and test key assumptions, particularly before disciplines develop in parallel or changes become expensive.

02

Concepts, engineering and prototypes

Concepts, models and simulations allow options to be compared. A prototype focuses on what the team needs to learn, with defined interfaces between mechanics, electronics and software. The result shows what was tested and what remains unresolved.

03

Verification and integrated development

Verification connects product requirements to tests of components and integrated systems. Validation assesses fitness for intended use. Traceable results and documented limitations are fed back to designers, product owners and those planning the next delivery.

04

Introduction and the product lifecycle

Manufacturing, service and maintenance influence design choices from an early stage. The consultant contributes to documentation, handover and change planning. Resource use, maintenance and lifespan inform the customer’s assessment of alternatives.

THE WORK IN PRACTICE

Examples of work
and deliverables.

We agree the scope and deliverables with you.

01

A shared product direction

Prioritised needs, use cases and product requirements. Disciplines share a starting point and a record of key assumptions and decisions.

02

A testable development step

A concept, model or prototype with a defined purpose. Results help the customer choose the next development step.

03

Verification and handover planning

Plans for testing and follow-up, with product information and outstanding questions handed to the next responsible team.

BEFORE YOUR NEXT STEP

Common questions
about this area.

Does this area only cover physical products?

No. Product development can cover digital services, physical products and combinations of hardware and software. The need determines which disciplines are required and how development, design, quality and maintenance should work together.

When do we need a prototype?

When testing can answer an important question better than discussion alone. The question may concern functionality, use or interaction between parts. First agree what you need to learn and how much detail is necessary.

Can you contribute to development already in progress?

Yes. Support can focus on engineering design, requirements, verification or coordination. We need to understand the current product and responsibilities so the expertise can contribute where it is most useful for the assignment.
